| ps from ps “They aren’t talking to me, right?” I’ve said this to Michelle a million times for a variety of reasons: someone’s yelling towards us at a Bills game, someone talking to me across a crowded room and doesn’t realize I have hearing loss and ringing in my ears, or even the occasional No Parking sign. Many times I wonder, are they really talking to me? And usually Michelle says: “Yes Steve, they are speaking to you!” In Matthew 21, Jesus is speaking to the Pharisees. He’s teaching them. Telling them stories that quote Old Testament verses about “the stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” “They” are the builders. “He” is the cornerstone. And then the great line – “Then the chief priests and Pharisees heard the parable, they realized he was speaking to/about them.” He was speaking directly to them. About them! It’s rare in Scriptures that we have moments when those being spoken to actually realize it. Jesus telling parable after parable, story after story, act after act, and more often than not, the hearers grumble, miss the point, walk away or continue doing exactly what they were doing before. Every so often though, they hear it and get it. My hope for you this week is as you read Scripture in church, daily devotions, or random stories from all over the Bible, you will realize that God IS speaking to YOU! These stories aren’t just designed for people from the way back machine. They aren’t designed for someone else. They are for us. To gift us with grace, guidance, inspiration, correction and forgiveness. It started in the beginning. It continued with the prophets. It would continue through the poetic writings. It slowed down and brought depth through Jesus. And blew through the air of the Holy Spirit building the early church. Story after story. All trying to help us hear that God’s love and grace are for us! So as Michelle would say, “Yes, Steve (or insert your name here), they’re speaking to you.” . Lord, thanks for all the stories that are speaking to me about your love. Amen. Still in One Peace,PS |
